Fire Sport begins its development in Europe in the 20s of the twentienth century, when the first competitions  were held. Rules and kinds of those competitions were taken from everyday situations in which firefighters fall while performing their duty.

In Bulgaria the practice and development of Fire Sport also has started at the beginning of the previous century and the first competitions were held in 1928 in Rousse.

For the first time the Federation of Fire Sport was founded in 1961. In 1991 it was registered under the Act for individuals and families. It is licensed by the State Agency for Youth and Sports as an umbrella-organization for regional associations together with local fire-sport clubs.

First time the Bulgarian team took part in international Fire-Sport competitions was in 1968. For five times the Republic of Bulgaria was the host of the international Fire-Sport competitions. In 1973, in 1984 and in 2003 Plovdiv hosted the Balkan Fire-Sport competitions, in 2008 the IV World Championship in Fire and Rescue Sport was conducted in Sofia, and in 2010 Plovdiv hosted the V Balkan tournament.

Some important objectives were set by the International Sport Federation of Firefighters and Rescuers (the ISFFR) which was founded in 2001. Those are: the further development and promotion of the profession of firefighter and rescuer, improving of professional and sportive skills and collaboration between  fire and rescue services worldwide.

From 13 to 16 of September, 2002, the I World Championship in Fire and Rescue Sport was held in Moscow, Russia. Delegations and teams from 20 countries took part in it, competing in four types of disciplines: "Combat deployment of motor pump," "Fire Relay Race 4 x 100 m "" Climbing tower with an assault-ladder "and" 100-meter course with obstacles. ").

Because of its attractiveness in the past few decades Fire Sport won tremendous popularity worldwide. This can be witnessed by the own fact that it was demonstrated while the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
